Injury Forces Karolina Muchova’s Exit, Sakkari Steps In at WTA Finals

On October 24th, it was announced by WTA officials that Karolina Muchova, currently ranked eighth in the world, would not be able to participate in the WTA Finals in Cancun.

The unfortunate reason for her withdrawal is a right wrist injury, which has forced her to step back from the prestigious season-ending event. In her place, the first alternate, Maria Sakkari from Greece, will take Muchova’s spot in the tournament.

Karolina Muchova had an outstanding season, earning her place as the eighth qualifier for the WTA Finals in Cancun. Her remarkable journey included reaching the final at Cincinnati and the semifinal at the U.S. Open.

However, she faced tough competition in the form of the talented American Coco Gauff on both occasions, resulting in defeats.

Her remarkable performances throughout the year were a testament to her skill and dedication, making her an exciting contender for the WTA Finals. Unfortunately, the wrist injury has dashed her hopes, but her journey to the top of women’s tennis continues to be an inspiring one.

“Together with the team and doctors we tried everything till the last moment to resolve my wrist injury,” Muchova said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, the time needed for the recovery is longer than we would’ve hoped for and therefore I had to make this unpleasant decision.”

As a result, the ninth-ranked Sakkari, who reached the semi-finals of last year’s competition, will participate in her third consecutive WTA Finals at this year’s event, which begins on Sunday.
