Beatriz Haddad Maia, ranked eighth, won the Huafa Technology WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai, her most important Hologic WTA Tour victory to date, in an exciting final.
She outlasted the No.7 seed, Zheng Qinwen, with a score of 7-6(11), 7-6(4) in a marathon match lasting 2 hours and 51 minutes.
Notably, this final became the season’s longest tour-level straight-sets match, surpassing Yuan Yue’s 7-5, 7-6(7) victory over Marie Bouzkova in the Seoul quarterfinals, which lasted 2 hours and 49 minutes. This victory marked Haddad Maia’s first title above the WTA 250 level, her first on hard courts, and her first since Birmingham in 2022.
Her remarkable resurgence in Zhuhai, where she remained unbeaten without dropping a set, came after a challenging period, having lost three out of four matches due to a hand injury from an unusual shower incident in Guadalajara.
Zheng had ended her remarkable eight-match winning run after winning the WTA 500 event in Zhengzhou just two weeks prior, but the result in their first meeting put an end to it.
After this week’s WTA Finals in Cancun conclude, Beatriz Haddad Maia, who is now ranked No. 19 in the rankings, is expected to rise significantly to at least No. 11 in the next ranking edition.
In the event that Barbora Krejcikova plays in two matches or wins as an alternate in Cancun, Haddad Maia will take back her career-high ranking of No. 10, which she first attained in June during her incredible run to the Roland Garros quarterfinals.
Haddad Maia Statement
“Today I was trying to be as aggressive as I was during this week,” Haddad Maia said. “My mentality was very important. I was trying to be patient in the moments things were not going the way that I wanted. It’s a very special week for me. When I came to Asia, I had stitches in my fingers in the first round of Beijing and now I’m finishing the season with a trophy in my hands.”
